Bathing is a crucial time for children with atopic skin. Follow a few steps to make the most of this time for sharing, playing, bonding and togetherness to restore suppleness and comfort to their epidermis.
1 - IDEAL TEMPERATURE
If too hot, water tends to dry the skin and exacerbate itching. If too cold, it can spoil this special time for parents and children. A temperature between 32 and 34 degrees is ideal for maintaining cutaneous balance.
2 – SOFTER WATER
The harder your water, the greater the risk of causing new outbreaks of itching. Try to limit the time spent in the bath to around 15 minutes. If necessary, add several drops of LIPIKAR Cleansing Oil to the water to soften it.
3 – SUITABLE CLEANSERS
Soap is the enemy of atopic skin. This is because its high pH irritates the epidermis. Consequently, it alters the hydrolipidic film that protects the skin against external stress. To prevent this, the La Roche-Posay Laboratory has formulated LIPIKAR Syndet, that gently cleanses the skin, preserving the cutaneous barrier and considerably reducing tight pulling sensations.
SOAPS FOR ALL SKIN TYPES
- A contraction of "synthetic detergent"
- Superfatting soaps are real soaps that are enriched with moisturizing active ingredients. They are particularly suitable for dry and sensitive skin.
4 – GENTLE BATHING
Washcloths can irritate the skin and they can also carry germs. For more gentle cleansing, work LIPIKAR Syndet into a lather on your skin using your fingertips, before rinsing thoroughly.
5 – TAKE GREAT CARE WHEN DRYING
Try to avoid rubbing when drying. Start by patting the most irritated areas with a clean towel or paper tissues. Take care not to leave any wet areas which could also weaken the epidermis.
6 – A BALM TO PREVENT ITCHING
Apply LIPKAR Baume AP+, a lipid-replenishing balm, by lightly massaging it into irritated areas. It contains Aqua Posae Filiformis, an exclusive, patented active ingredient that acts on the two determining factors of atopy-prone skin: the microbiome and the cutaneous barrier. As a result of this dual action, LIPIKAR Baume AP+ provides immediate relief and decreases the frequency of bouts of severe dryness, resulting in longer-lasting skin comfort.
WHAT ABOUT SWIMMING?
Swimming in pools or the sea is not contraindicated for those with atopic skin, providing that they rinse thoroughly after getting out of the water. Also, remember to soothe and rehydrate the skin with a spritz of La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water.
