UV rays are required to synthesise vitamin D, which is essential in fixing calcium in the bones. In the summer, even if the sky is overcast, brief periods of exposure (15 minutes) twice a week are all it takes to ensure absorption. Therefore, sun protection does not interfere with this process in any way.
