What causes scalp sensitivity? Pollution, stress…

A sensitive scalp is a scalp that feels itchy and irritated. Several factors, such as pollution, stress or even products that are too harsh can cause the scalp to become increasingly sensitive. To effectively treat your scalp, adopt a good daily hair care routine.

Symptoms

When the scalp feels tight and itchy

Tightness, itchiness, and hair that even feels painful at its roots... Like the skin on our face and body, our scalp can also become sensitive.  It is subject to multiple aggressive elements on a daily basis, which cause it to weaken.

When confronted with certain factors, such as pollution or stress, the scalp develops an acute level of sensitivity. In addition to itchiness, there is a sensation of dryness and the scalp feels painful to the touch.  Dandruff may also appear. In fact, the scalp’s physiological flora becomes modified and microorganisms multiply. The skin cells over the scalp are renewed at a much more rapid pace, causing dandruff to form.

Origins

There are several causes to a sensitive scalp

Scalp sensitivity has several origins. It could be caused by an imbalance in the sebum secretion process, which leads to irritation. Pollution and stress can also irritate the scalp. In fact, pollution coats the hair in harmful elements that create a dull film over the hair and, like stress, generate free radicals. These free radicals modify the scalp’s structure and create changes in the hair bulb. The hair then loses its radiance and vigor. The following common elements can also cause scalp sensitivity:

  • An imbalanced diet
  • Harsh shampoo
  • Frequent styling and blow drying
  • Wearing motorcycle helmets for long periods of time
  • Chlorinated water, sunrays...
Itchiness, red patches and flaky skin may be signs of disorders, such as eczema or psoriasis. If this is the case, it must be treated.

Treatments

Gentle shampoo will help treat the scalp

To restore physiological balance to the scalp, the first step is to use a gentle shampoo for sensitive scalp. The other good daily hair care routines to adopt are:

  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals
  • Learn how to manage your stress
  • Regularly massage your scalp to stimulate blood circulation
  • Do not keep your hair pulled back tightly, let it “breathe” during the day
  • Wear a hat in the sun to protect your hair
If your dandruff does not improve, please contact your dermatologist.
