Facial sebaceous scaly patches: a chronic condition but not inevitable

Sebaceous scaly patches are a form of chronic dermatitis which manifests itself in flaking and redness on the face. While their origin is still poorly understood, suitable treatments do exist.

Symptoms

The symptoms

Sebaceous scaly patches (or seborrheic dermatitis) are a common form of chronic dermatitis. On the face, seborrheic dermatitis manifests itself in red patches covered in small greasy flakes, particularly in areas where the skin is richer in sebum like the nasal folds, eyebrows, or even the forehead and hairline. These symptoms can also be accompanied by dandruff on the scalp.Seborrheic dermatitis mainly affects adult males aged between 18 and 40 years old. It can also occur in infants, from two weeks after birth. In babies, it takes the form of the famous « cradle cap » on the face and scalp.

Origins

Origins are still poorly understood

The real cause of sebaceous scaly patches is little known. It would seem, however, that a yeast naturally present on the skin called Malassezia is responsible. The presence of large quantities of sebum on certain areas of the skin also promotes their development. These patches get worse when the body’s immune defence system is weakened.

Treatments

Preventing the development of sebaceous scaly patches

Sebaceous scaly patches are a chronic condition but effective treatments do exist. However, to benefit from them, it is important to consult a dermatologist. Only they can prescribe suitable treatment. These treatments generally consist of local antifungals or dermocorticosteroids. It is advisable, however, to also combine them with dermo-cosmetics applied daily to optimise the treatment’s effectiveness. For example, by washing the face with a gentle cleansing base, and using a suitable day cream.

Consult a dermatologist. They are there to treat your skin condition.
