Men's hair loss : heredity and stress are the main causes

When you have alopecia or start to lose a lot of hair, it is essential to rapidly treat the condition. Man alopecia, which is often hereditary, may be slowed down, thanks to specific anti-hair loss treatments.  It is also important to avoid stress and eat well-balanced meals.

Symptoms

When hair loss becomes abnormal

We all lose between 50 and 80 strands of hair per day. Like our skin cells, our hair is renewed naturally. New strands of hair, which have an average life cycle of 2 to 7 years, replace those that we lose daily. And, each hair follicle produces a new strand of hair during its growth phase. Our hair will experience about 25 to 30 cycles like this during our lifetime. However, when confronted with certain factors, the hair loss process can speed up. When no new strands of hair replace the hair that is lost, the hair becomes thinner in different areas.

Origins

Causes: genes, stress, change of season...

For men, hair loss is mainly due to genetics. In fact, hereditary androgenetic alopecia affects approximately 70 % of all men and is caused by an excess amount of male hormones, androgens. More commonly called male pattern baldness, androgenetic alopecia can occur at a very early age, at around 18.

Progressively, hair growth slows down and the cycle drops down to one year rather than three or four. The hair follicle is less deeply embedded in the dermis and begins to atrophy. Consequence: the hair becomes thinner. The hair on the scalp begins to recede along the temples, forehead and top of the head.

Hair loss may also be caused by:

  • medicines, such as anticoagulants or cancer treatments
  • a psychological shock
  • stress
  • imbalanced diet, etc.
  • seasonal change

Treatments

Solutions to fight hair loss

In any case, we recommended that you rapidly consult a dermatologist in order to effectively inhibit hair loss. In fact, it is easier to slow down hair loss than it is to promote growth. There are different hair loss treatments, such as specific shampoos, lotions and serums. Your dermatologist can also prescribe medical treatments. Finally, there are also surgical hair transplant techniques that may be used to fight against hair loss.

On a daily basis, we recommend that you:

  • use gentle shampoos and avoid harsh hair products
  • rest and avoid stress
  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals
