5 habits for taking care of atopic skin

Non-serious cases of atopic dermatitis usually disappear before the age of ten. Discover a few simple techniques to minimize discomfort.

Gentle bathing

Avoid foaming products when bathing children with atopic skin. Instead, use soap-free cleansers, such as LIPIKAR Syndet orLIPIKAR Cleansing Oil, that cleanse the skin without causing irritation. Also, be sure to use shampoos that are suitable for the most sensitive skin, such as KERIUM Doux.

The fight against dust mites

Atopy is a genetic predisposition to developing allergies. The presence of dust mites in the house should therefore be monitored. Vacuum regularly and air rooms daily, particularly bedrooms. If necessary, purchase mattress protectors and pillows that are specifically designed to prevent dust mites.

Restorative sleep

Atopic dermatitis is characterized by itching which can disturb children during the night… and their parents. Get a good night's sleep by maintaining the bedroom temperature between 18 and 20 degrees: this will prevent the atmosphere from becoming too dry. If necessary, purchase air humidifiers.

The softness of cotton

When dressing your child, you should take two things into consideration: warmth and fabric. Indeed, it is essential to avoid any excessive perspiration which could cause irritation. Wool and synthetic fabrics should also be avoided. Instead, opt for cotton clothing which is softer on skin.

Beware of sweating

Taking part in sports is not prohibited for children with atopic skin. However, beware of activities that cause profuse sweating. After exercising, remind them to take a shower straight away and apply LIPIKAR Baume AP+, a lipid-replenishing balm that prevents irritation and scratching, to provide immediate relief.

In the event that your child experiences repeated irritation, your first response should be to consult a dermatologist. Only a dermatologist will be able to provide an accurate diagnosis, prescribe treatment and give appropriate advice.
